I understand what you are saying, but I would counter-argue as follows ...
- Religion is generally dogma based
- The Scientific Methodology is generally evidence-based, hence the stuff that is untestable and has no meaningful data tends to not make the cut.
They really are not the same.
What gets taught as "science" is the stuff that have been tested and validated to not be wrong.
Should other ideas by taught that go beyond that scope?
Of course, but not as "science".
History of religious belief and the diversity of the associated ideas ... not as a means to promote one strand as "Truth", but rather as an appreciation of the diversity of such thoughts.
Also, how about Bible as literature and an appreciation of the diversity of interpretations of it is also a valid course I would encourage.
