Speaking in Tongues — What is really going on?

I was once part of a Pentecostal Christian movement that practised “Speaking in Tongues”. I was not simply an observer, but had jumped right in with all my heart and sincerely believed that I was truly both Born Again and also Baptised in the Holy Spirit. My evidence for the reality of all this was my ability to Speak in Tongues.

I have come a long way since those days. I no longer believe all of that and could now best be described as “Not Religious”. So what happened, how did somebody such as myself who once had clear definitive supernatural evidence end up becoming such a skeptic?

That perhaps is a question I’ll answer within another article. Right now my focus is “Speaking in Tongues”. What exactly is this, and what is the truth, what is really going on?

What is Speaking In Tongues?

“Speaking is Tongues” is described by practitioners as a spirtual gift that involves speaking an unknown language.

It is often considered to be proof that God has poured his spirit into you. What perhaps makes it unique is that this is something very tangible. It can potentially be measured, examined, and studied. Those hearing it for the first time might find it to be a bit creepy or bizarre, especially if they don’t know what is going on.
